What’s a Sex Doula?

If you’ve been following Greenville Boudoir for a little while, you may know that our founder, Latoya, is a sex doula. Often we hear “doula” and think of someone who provides birth or postpartum care for women.

So what’s a sex doula?

Doulas are strictly nonmedical companions and they are not responsible to diagnose you but to provide care for multiple needs you may have. A sex doula offers insight, attention, and education to vulnerable and personal matters that clients share with them regarding their intimate lives. These personal journeys are acknowledged and then worked through in an open conversation.

Some people hear the explanation and think “oh, so a sex coach.” In some ways yes, in others… no. Doulas take on many roles within their work including activist, educator, healer, and caregiver. While sexuality is a nuanced and complicated topic, sex doulas believe the most important sexual relationship you will have is with yourself first. They allow you to see that through work and deep connection with oneself is how you find a better connection within your body.

Part of a doulas job is clarifying that sexual care is a huge part of self-care. While the sexual wellness industry is all about selling products and capitalizing on people’s passions, it doesn’t connect people’s bodies with mindfulness. Sex doulas prioritize pleasure with the embodiment of an individual’s sexuality.

Our society rarely prioritizes women’s pleasure. The sex doula profession stands firmly against to the patriarchy and champions women’s sexual pleasure, and through working with a doula - you’ll have the unique opportunity to work through harmful beliefs and lessons you’ve learned through society about your body. It’s time to celebrate YOU and prioritize the pleasure in your body.

In short, sex doulas prioritize autonomy. Learning to advocate for your wants far extends the bedroom. So much of a doula's work is validating intuition, gut feelings, and leaning into what your body is saying to you. While the name “sex doula” can sound intimidating, it’s a place to offer yourself and your feelings honestly and to gain valuable insight into your body and mind.

If you’re wanting to reconnect with your sexuality or if you have questions, let’s talk about it. It’s never too late to learn more about your innermost self.
